An O-gauge tunnel portal designed for paint and scenery
How a support-free PLA portal preserves the important O-gauge proportions and leaves surface detail to the finishing stage.

The application
A model railway portal has to establish scale and clearance before the surrounding scenery is built. At O gauge, the mass of the arch matters more than tiny mortar lines that a 0.4mm nozzle cannot reproduce cleanly.
Constraints
- The bore and springing dimensions need to follow a consistent 1:43.5 scale reference.
- The arch must print without support scars on the visible face or inside the bore.
- Stone courses and voussoirs should be added with paint or texture rather than modelled below reliable nozzle resolution.
Process
01
Scale the opening
A 4200mm prototype bore becomes 96.6mm at O gauge, with the spring line at 69.0mm and a substantial 13.8mm arch ring.

Choose the orientation
The portal prints flat on its back, turning the opening into a vertical hole through a 10.3mm plate instead of an unsupported arch.

Finish the surface
The smooth printed face is intended for primer, stone texture, paint and weathering before it is blended into the cutting.
Design outcome
The downloadable model provides a 124.1mm-wide, support-free base for scenic finishing, with scale-critical dimensions stated in the catalogue. Primer, stone colour and weathering turn the plain print into part of the cutting.
