PLA vs PETG vs ABS for Custom 3D Printed Parts

14 Jul 2026 · 1 min read

Most custom parts come down to a choice between three materials. Here is how to pick, based on where and how the part is used.

PLA — easy, rigid, indoor

PLA is stiff, dimensionally accurate and cheap. It is ideal for prototypes, display parts and indoor items that do not get hot or stressed. Its weakness is heat: leave a PLA part in a hot car or in direct sun and it can soften and warp. It is also relatively brittle under impact.

PETG — tougher, some outdoor use

PETG is the sensible default for functional parts. It is tougher and less brittle than PLA, handles moisture and mild outdoor exposure well, and resists heat better. It is a great all-rounder for brackets, mounts and enclosures.

ABS / ASA — heat and UV resistant

ABS and ASA handle heat and, in ASA's case, sunlight far better than PLA or PETG. They suit automotive interiors, outdoor fittings and parts near warmth. They are more demanding to print, which is reflected in the price.

Quick guide

  • Indoor, low stress, or a prototype → PLA
  • Functional, tough, occasional outdoor → PETG
  • Hot, sunny, or automotive → ABS/ASA
  • Flexible or rubbery → TPU
  • Maximum strength / engineering → Nylon or Nylon-CF
